The Kentucky AFL-CIO and Teamsters Local 89 are suing to overturn the anti-union Kentucky Right To Work Act. The law took away the right of union workers to include dues payments in their collective bargaining agreement with employers.
The law lets workers covered under union contracts stop paying dues to pay the costs of collective bargaining.
Kentucky AFL-CIO President Bill Londrigan says the law “is simply another element of a low-wage economic development model coupled with a political strategy to weaken unions and stifle the collective voices of Kentucky’s workers.”
Anti-union groups and politicians support these laws pretending they care about worker rights when their real agenda is to de-fund organized labor.
Fred Zuckerman, President of Teamsters Local 89, says “The Kentucky Constitution is uniquely equipped to prevent unequal corporate special legislation and I am confident that HB 1 will be struck down.”
Unions say these laws are government interference in the rights of workers and employers to reach mutually satisfactory labor contract agreements.
