Local 728 Hardship Fund

Local 728's Hardship Fund is open for qualified Active members (non-retired) in need of financial aid.

Hardship Fund Terms & Conditions

Interest free “Hardship Fund” loans are available for up to $2,500.00* to any Active status (non-retired) Local 728 member, up to 200 members per year who meet qualification requirements. *Union officers are limited to a maximum loan of $2,000.00. 

The fund contains an annual funding amount of $500,000.00.

Include this message in the body of the email: 

I <insert your name> would like apply to receive a Local 728 Hardship Fund Loan in the amount of $<indicate an amount of up to $2,500.00>.

I am providing Local 728 with a copy of my MPIPHP work history for the previous 180 days (attach a copy of the work history print out or bring a copy to the offices of Local 728).

I have had a total gross income of $9,000.00 or less in the last 180 days, not inclusive of EDD unemployment or disability benefits.


If it is determined that I meet the qualifications to receive a loan, I am willing to sign a promissory note and I agree with the terms and conditions of this loan.

Qualifications

  • An applicant cannot be in arrears more than 2 quarters of quarterly dues with Local 728 at the time of application for a loan.
  • A member applicant can have no debts owed to Local 728 other than two or fewer quarters of dues at the time of application.
  • A member must certify or state that they have had a gross income of $9,000.00 or less in each of the previous two (2) quarters, not inclusive of EDD unemployment or disability benefits.
  • Applicant must provide work history records from MPIPHP to Local 728 for the previous two quarters (180 days).

    For example, go to MPIPHP.org and login. Once logged in, go to “Work History”. Select a “From” date that goes back 6-months from the date of application (for example if the date of application is September 20th, select a “from” date of March 20th to show a 180-day record from March to September).

    Then select “Print Work History”, print out the work record and either send it or bring it to the Local.
  • After verification that the hours reported to MPI for the previous 180 period amount to earnings of less than $9,000.00 gross income, the loan approval process shall move forward.
  • The loan amount request can be up to $2,500.00 for Active members (except Officers of Local 728 who are limited to a maximum of $2,000.00).
  • Repayment terms: Within one year of issuance.
  • Repayment in part or in full can be made at any time within the repayment window.
  • Only one active loan per Active member per year.
  • If a member is expelled from membership, any balance owed at the time of expulsion from membership shall be due and payable in full.
  • Members who fail to repay their loans within one year of issuance shall be issued a 1099 tax form and barred from borrowing or receiving Local 728 financial assistance funds.

I, ___________________, in exchange for the receipt of $[amount up to $2,500.00], representing hardship benefits paid to me by the Hardship Fund, established by IATSE Local 728 (“Local 728”), promise to repay to Local 728 the full sum of money paid to me, per the terms and conditions of this Promissory Note (“Note”).

In consideration for the benefits paid to me, I agree that I will register myself as “out of work” on the Local 728 Availability List (“List”) when I am available for employment.  Further, I agree that upon my return to work, I will immediately notify the Local 728 Call Steward of my employment.

I will repay the entire sum of benefits received by me by, one year from the date of issuance, [month, day, year].

Should I fail to repay the monies owed through this Note, I agree I will be liable for all local, state, and federal taxes associated with the income generated through the monies derived from the Note.

In the event I fail to make repayments on the monies borrowed through this Note by [month, day, year], I will no longer be eligible for any monetary relief from the Hardship Fund, including any further payments of the monies detailed in this Note, and that I may be subject to discipline under Local 728’s Bylaws on account of my breach of this Promissory Note.

I will promptly inform Local 728 of any change in my name or address and any other information Local 728 requires in order to enforce this Promissory Note.
