The Coronavirus outbreak has us all on edge. As the crisis grows, California’s unions are responding to ensure workers are protected.

We’re working with the Newsom Administration to ensure workers have the information they need to protect themselves and their families. The first thing to note is that all California employees have the opportunity to earn paid sick days under California law. Unions fought hard for this law to ensure workers can take time off when illness strikes at home.

3-23-20 Safeway.com drivers become the first home grocery delivery workers to unionize

In mail ballots counted Feb. 25, a unit of 53 Portland-area Safeway.com delivery drivers voted 30-18 to join the Teamsters. Employed by Groceryworks.com Operating Company LLC—a subsidiary of Safeway—they pick up groceries ordered online and deliver them to nearby homes in refrigerated box trucks.

The current situation with the Coronavirus has hit Los Angeles, leaving many in our community concerned and confused. As announcements stream in about emergency procedures and canceled events, we assure you that the Los Angeles Labor Movement is working around the clock to ensure our members are protected.

We would like to thank our brave union members on the frontlines, such as our healthcare workers, janitors, and hospitality workers, for keeping Los Angeles safe and running smoothly.

Machinists and electricians get raises of up to $10,000 at Nabisco

After two years of negotiations, only when 32 union machinists and 10 electricians at Mondelēz’ Portland Nabisco bakery started preparing for a strike did the company give them an acceptable offer. On Feb. 2, members of Machinists Local Lodge 63 and IBEW Local 48 ratified a pair of union contracts that raise wages $6,000 to $10,000 year or more.
