3-21-20 IATSE update of legislative efforts for relief

No doubt many of you have been experiencing an information overload the past few days regarding the federal legislative response to the COVID-19 crisis. U.S. House passes labor law reform

The most far-reaching pro-union labor law reform in 85 years passed the U.S. House Feb. 6 on a 224-194 vote. Known as the Protect the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, HB 2474 would crack down on unlawful anti-union tactics by employers, make it easier and quicker for workers to unionize and get a first contract, and eliminate so-called “right to work” laws on the books in 27 states that are intended to keep unions weak.

They’re at it again.

The brand new California State law that defines who can be employed as a sub-contractor and who must be paid as an company employee is still under judicial challenge, yet the greedy corporations funding those legal challenges are not waiting for a court based legal outcome.

Uber, Lyft & Door Dash are determined to remove themselves from compliance with this law by any means necessary.

They have teamed up to qualify an initiative for the November ballot called the “California App-Based Drivers Regulation Initiative.”

AB 5 is the most important state law in decades to address widespread inequality by raising wages for workers and holding corporations accountable. Rather than comply with the law to provide workers with basic protections and economic security, big corporations embarked on a spending frenzy to overturn it.

AFGE urges Congress to protect Defense workers’ union rights

The American Federation of Government Employees is urging members of Congress to protect the rights of Department of Defense workers to join a union after President Trump authorized DoD to end collective bargaining wherever it sees fit, citing absurd reasons like flexibility and security — as if workers having a voice in their life at work is a national security threat.
