NELP: 'A Culture Of Labor Law Non-Compliance' At Hardee's And Carl's Jr

The National Employment Law Project's Catherine Ruckelshaus says under CEO Andy Puzder CKE restaurants have a culture of not complying with labor laws.

If Puzder didn't make sure labor law was followed where he was CEO how can workers expect Puzder to enforce labor law if he becomes Labor Secretary?

"The culture at the company is not one of complying with basis laws. And that's the problem.

Companies can make a choice about who they operate with, who they contract with in a franchise agreement. And they can certainly set standards and issue directives like Subway has with its franchisees to make sure that baseline minimum wage and health and safety and discrimination laws are followed."

Ruckelshaus says CKE restaurants are also not respecting the legal right of workers to organize unions and the company is also threatening workers who speak to the press about it.

"CKE restaurants are also suppressing worker organizing. Carl's Jr. restaurants have told employees not to speak to the press, saying 'the press is not our friend' and threatening discipline to the workers if they do. That missive came from CKE down to the restaurants."
