The fight for social justice is a full-time job. That’s been the driving philosophy behind the Davis Putter Scholarship Fund for more than half-a-century. The fund provides grants to students actively working for peace and justice.
Andrea Flores is a University of Texas student involved in worker rights advocacy group United Students Against Sweatshops:
[Andrea Flores]: “I come from a working class background. I know that I have limited resources…have to work throughout the whole semester full-time if I want to be able to afford the basic necessities. I didn’t know there was something out there actually supporting students who are involved in organizing. And I realized, after the semester ended and they requested a progress report, how much I was actually able to do because I was funded and supported by the Davis-Putter foundation. I would never have had that time and energy to spend on organizing on campus and in the community if I didn’t have that financial assistance. It’s really easy to look at things and see the need for change…things that need improving, but maybe that first step is really, really difficult and intimidating.”
